Gender diversity in the university – enhancing equality and wellbeing

The diversity of sex and gender includes all genders, ways to express one's gender and variations of sex characteristics. The Finnish laws on equality acknowledge the diversity of sex and gender, but the binary categories of man and woman still affect a lot of our norms, structures and practices. The rigid binary leaves behind individuals and groups of people, causing poorer wellbeing and less chance for participation, and prevents the actualisation of equality and equity in our society.

This training offers basic information on the diversity of sex and gender as well as on how to enhance equality and equity in the university. You will be provided with practical tips on how to develop the structures and practices of your work to better acknowledge the diversity of sex and gender. Taking diversity into account creates better wellbeing for both students and faculty, and provides more freedom for each individual to focus on their basic tasks in the university.

Trainer: Teija Ryhtä, Youth Work and Participation Expert, Seta – LGBTI Rights in Finland. Bachelor of Social Sciences, studying for a master's degree in social work.
