Author Alexandra Salmela visits Movi on April 7th

On Thursday April 7th, MOVI (Centre for Academic multilingual Communication) will have the honor of welcoming Alexandra Salmela - a Slovak-born author who writes in both Finnish and Slovak.
  • Date Apr 07, 2022 from 02:00 PM to 04:00 PM (Europe/Helsinki / UTC300)
  • Location Oppio, O103-104 (Language lounge)
  • Add event to calendar iCal

Salmela is known for her first novel written in Finnish, 27, or The Death Makes an Artist, which was published in 2010. The work won the Helsingin Sanomat Literature Prize and the Kaihar Culture Prize and was nominated for the Finlandia Prize in literature.
Salmela's and Bondestam’s fantastic children's book An Imaginary friend has been re-illustrated and published in Slovak (Fantazmagorický kamarát, 2019). At the moment, she is working on the Slovak version of her last novel 56, I am (2021).

What makes Salmela's works interesting is writing in both Finnish and Slovak. Are the works identical? What happens to the author’s mind when writing the same book in a different language?

What will make the occasion special, will be the presence of Slovak Ambassador to Finland Mrs. Slavomíra Mašurová and Mrs. Barbara Haberová, the Slovak Political and Cultural Attaché to Finland.

The discussion will provide an opportunity to discuss multilingual writing, the synchronization of image and text, as well as Slovakia and its current cultural and political situation.

The event will be held in Oppio, O103-104 (Language Lounge) from 2 pm to 4 pm.

Welcome!
